How Much Does A Home Security System Cost?

Your home is a place to relax, sit back and unwind after long and busy days at work or school. Unfortunately, property crime like burglary can be common in some areas, and can lead to people worrying, when they should be relaxing. While rates have been going down over the years, burglaries still occur and you need to ensure you can protect your home and property.

Thankfully, having a security system can give you peace of mind that your home is protected and that you, your family and your belongings are safe. But how much does a security system cost? In most cases, it can be a few hundred dollars or so, but the costs can vary a lot.

This article is going to go over a few things that can factor into how much a home security system will cost you, to give you a better understanding of what things you should expect to be paying for.

Equipment

There are many different equipment or components of a security system. While some things are standard amongst almost all security systems (like a panel, door sensors, etc...), there are others that people can pick and choose from. They are great to have, but not required in most cases. This includes cameras, motion sensing lights, window contacts and others.

The amount of equipment you decide to have in your system can be one of the largest factors on how expensive it is as a whole. The more you want included, generally the pricier it will be, but for good reason. Also, in some cases, the brands can have an impact on the pricing of certain equipment as well.

CCTV

While the cost will be higher initially, many of these are great options to consider adding to your security system. They can let you remotely check in on your home, and often better deter potential burglars or criminals from victimizing your home.

Installation

The installation and activation fees are another component that can dictate how expensive a system is. If you do a lot of the work yourself, costs will often be minimal, but if you have a professional handle everything, they can be a lot higher. So when possible, install your system on your own to save more money.

Of course, your ability to install yourself may vary depending on the type and kind of system you are getting put in. For example, installing a wireless security system can be easy, but a wired system can be a little more challenging. One simply involves putting a panel up in the right place and powering it, while the other can be a lot more intensive.

In most cases, wireless systems are more common than ever, but the wired ones do still exist. Ultimately, the choice is yours and depends on your comfortability. If you do decide to install your own, be sure to test it after completion of the work to make sure it is working as expected.

Professional Monitoring

While many costs associated with a security system are up-front, there are some that will be recurring month over month. One example of this is professional  monitoring. This is when your security system is monitored around the clock by the alarm or security company.

If an intruder attempts to gain access to the home, the monitoring company will be notified and will contact you and alert the authorities incredibly quickly. This can minimize the damage of a break-in, stop it before it even starts, and can give you peace of mind that someone is always taking care of your home, even when you’re away.

While the cost is monthly to utilize this service, if you opt to go with monitoring the security provider will often give you your equipment free of charge, or give you a maior discount, to keep costs lower.

In conclusion, the cost of a home security system can vary depending on what equipment you get, how it is installed and whether or not you get extras like monitoring. But no matter the cost, having a home security system is a good idea to keep your home and family safe.
