Safeguarding Yourself From Pests

Best Plants To Repel Mosquitoes are irritating little buzzing pests. They spread many terrible viruses. Malaria, Zika Virus, West Nile Virus—all of these are mosquito-borne illnesses. Infection from such viruses can kill those who are very young, very old, or not in the best health. Beyond this lethality, mosquito bites are downright uncomfortable.

Obviously, it makes sense to get rid of these insects as it’s possible to; but if you’re in a place where they dominate during the warm months, this is easier to conceive than achieve.

Certainly, there are chemical options, but these can have negative health side effects for you and your family. Thankfully, there are plants mosquitoes are naturally repelled by, we’ll cover a few here. You can either burn these plants or apply solutions made from them to your body. Some have a smell that’s better kept at arm’s length, some are very pleasant.

Citronella, Lemongrass, Garlic, Rosemary

You’ve likely seen citronella lanterns or tiki torches on sale in varying department stores. Mosquitoes hate citronella. They’re also not fond of lemongrass, garlic, or rosemary. While lemongrass can be tolerable, as citronella, garlic, and rosemary may not be pleasant except in a cooking context. That said, you can get several things accomplished at once.

If you’re doing a cookout, and everybody likes garlic, then use plenty! Rosemary is a bit more pleasant and evokes taste notes often related to lamb. Garlic and rosemary go well with many types of meat; so you might kill two birds with one stone here.

Lavender, Catnip, Peppermint

Some more attractive scents are catnip, lavender, and peppermint. These have a refreshing effect, and perhaps that’s what keeps the mosquitoes from bugging you. Certainly, there is going to be a scientific explanation somewhere.

At any rate, you can grow these plants with relative ease, and they look great in your garden. Plus, they have a practical use. If you’ve got cats, you can harvest your own catnip. With peppermint, you can make your own mint juleps; while lavender is pleasant in terms of look and smell, and can be used for a variety of purposes.

Essential Oils

There’s a lot to recommend an effort to repel mosquitoes via essential oils. Essential oils are basically all the scents of varying plants condensed down to an exceptionally potent form. Just a few drops of these oils put on your body can keep the mosquitoes from landing on you. Also, you can find such oils very easily.

Oftentimes grocery stores will have an entire rack of these oils. Hundreds are available. You can mix and match, or find those that you like best. Lavender, rosemary, and peppermint are all available and easy to find. You may even plant flora which you can use to harvest your own essential oils, but this will certainly be a process.

Keeping The Bloodsuckers At Bay

Mosquitoes are more than irritating, they can be dangerous. But you don’t have to douse yourself in chemicals like those in traditional bug spray to keep them from biting you. In fact, natural options are often better, more pleasant, and sometimes even cheaper. If you grow your own plants, over time mosquitoes will find other places to spawn—just don’t leave standing water anywhere.

To summarize, essential oils made from plants mosquitoes don’t like such as citronella, rosemary, lavender, garlic, catnip, peppermint, or lemongrass can repel these insects naturally. Whatever ways you have of making these aromas potent can be recommendable. It’s possible to keep mosquitoes from ruining the great outdoors for you, and in a natural way.
