Sprinkler Valve Won’t Turn Off? Valuable Tips You Need to Know!

But I have good news—you can actually fix this simple dilemma of yours. What to do when your sprinkler valve won’t turn off? Well, I bring you two solutions below.

Why the Sprinkler Valve Won’t Turn Off?

Of course, you may be wondering what happened to your sprinkler system. Why did it not turn off? Well, there are two possible reasons. Here are some of them:

The valves are blocked with debris.

Since sprinkler systems, especially the valves, are exposed to various environmental factors like dust, dirt and water, there is a high chance that debris will accumulate inside it.  Due to the blockage, the valves may fail to close. 

The valves/ solenoids are already worn out.

If you would want to maintain the efficiency of your sprinkler system, you may need to replace its parts from time to time. This goes the same with your shower valves.

If you fail to do so, wear and tear will affect the solenoids and may prevent it from shutting close.

It is essential to know what might have caused the valves to malfunction so you can choose the best possible solution to your problem.

2 Ways on How to Fix Your Sprinkler Valve

There are two common ways on how you can fix your sprinkler valve. When choosing a technique to use, you have to consider the reason why your sprinkler valve won’t shut off. 

Technique #1: Flush the sprinkler valves.

If you feel that there are debris inside the valves, the best thing that you can do is to flush it out. You can do this by performing the following steps:

Step 1. Turn off your sprinkler system.

Since the valves won’t turn off, the best thing that you can do is to disconnect the power to the control box of the sprinkler system. In this way, you can work on the valves without having to deal with water gushing around you. 

Step 2. Remove the solenoid.

If you do not know what a solenoid is, it is the sprinkler part that is the cylinder located above the top of the valve. Unscrew it by rotating it in a counter-clockwise motion.

Step 3. Unscrew the valves.

After that, remove the screws that are holding the valve cop in place. Some models do not have screws. If you are using this model, you can turn the cap-like lid of the jar instead.

Step 4. Disassemble the valve.

Remove the cap from the valve. Remove the parts of the valve such as the seats, seals, diaphragm, springs, rings or gaskets. Make sure to remember how they are placed inside the valve so you can bring them back later on.

Step 5. Rinse the valve.

Remove the grit and debris inside the valves by flushing the components of the valve with water. As you are washing the valve, inspect its parts.  

If you have found a damaged part, proceed on doing the second technique. If there are no damaged parts, proceed with performing the next step.

Turn on the main valve as slowly as possible to allow water to pass through the open valve. Do this for about 30 seconds.

Step 6. Reassemble the parts of the valve. 

Put the parts back in their corresponding positions inside the valve. Put the solenoid back on top of the valve.

Step 7. Turn on your sprinkler system.

Connect the sprinkler system to its power source and check if the valves are already working correctly. 

Technique #2: Replace the solenoid/ valve.  

If you have noticed any damaged parts inside the valve, it needs to be replaced. If the valves still did not close after you have flushed the debris out, it means that the solenoid needs changing.

If this is the case, you need to shut off the valves manually. But please keep in mind that the manual shutting of the valves is only done to conserve water. It won’t repair your solenoid, so you still need to replace it.

Step 1. Find the system control box.

This is usually found near the water line outside your house. Open the box and try to locate which valve is still running. You will know that the valve is still running as it will be vibrating.

Step 2. Turn off the valve.

Wear protective gloves. Turn the solenoid clockwise until it is snug. This will help stop the flow of water.

In some models, you would need to look for the small tab found in the side of the solenoid. Rotate it clockwise to stop the flow of water.
