Succulents have become an incredibly popular plant to landscape your front yard. In this article, we will review the reason why succulents have become so popular to landscape with, and a few things you should consider if you plan to add succulents to your yard.

1. Drought Tolerant

The primary reason why succulents have become so popular for front yards is because of their drought-tolerant features. Succulents love incredibly dry environments. This is because succulents hate having too much water in their leaves and roots. In order to grow and thrive succulents require there to be very little water in their soil and environment. This is one of the primary reasons why succulents have become so popular, this is because many states in the United States have been incredibly affected by drought. Often times this has led to local governments shutting off the water so that people do not waste water watering their lawns or washing cars. Utilizing succulents to landscape a front yard has become the popular solution to a lack of water available for watering and sustaining an attractive yard or lawn.

2. Succulents Are Beautiful

The second reason why succulents have become so popular for front yards is because succulents come in various unique colors and shapes. This has aided in the rise of succulents as the ideal landscaping plant because it allows people to add a little character to their yard. The unique shape and color of each succulent bring forth different and unique thoughts and ideas to each person that observes their beauty. This individuality present in each succulent brings character to the yard as the design is uniquely appreciated and specific to the person who created the design.

3. Succulents Need Well Draining Soil

The two reasons listed above are the primary reason why succulents have become so popular for yard use. It is important to remember that if you are going to buy succulents and add them to your yard to remember two things. The first thing is that succulents need well-draining soil to succeed in a yard. This is because, as mentioned before, succulents are dry loving plants. This means that succulents must be placed in soil so that excess water does not accumulate in its roots. Purchasing a well-draining potting mix is important because it is likely that the soil or dirt in your yard is incredibly loamy and hard. This means that water probably does not seep into the ground very well. If you purchase a well-draining potting mix and loosen up the dirt a little, then your succulents will thrive in this new environment that can easily drain excess water.

4. Choose the Correct Succulents

The second thing to remember when adding succulents in your yard is to select the correct succulents. There are numerous varieties of succulents. Some varieties of succulents are not ideal for outdoor use. Some popular varieties of succulents include Echeveria, Crassula, Haworthia, Sedum, Aeonium, and Aloe. It is important to remember that not all of these varieties of succulents are ideal for outdoor use. This is because some varieties of succulents cannot withstand direct sunlight. These varieties include Haworthia and Aloe. If some of these varieties are left out in direct sunlight for too long of the day they will burn and die. For this reason, it is important when adding succulents to your lawn to select varieties of succulents that will succeed outdoors in direct sunlight. These varieties include Echeveria, Aeonium, and Crassula.

Ultimately succulents are great plants for any outdoor yard or space. If you live in an area where drought is a problem and you are looking to spruce up your lawn, succulents may very well be your solution.
