With the approach of colds, our houses need especially close attention and care since the plumbing system is the most vulnerable thing in all the households.  A house, regardless of how expensive it is, will eventually become worthless if it doesn’t have a fully functional plumbing system. How can you and your family stay comfortable indoors if there’s no working plumbing? Do you think you can easily sell your house in the future if it doesn’t have functional plumbing?

If we don’t get it ready for winter properly, it can result in many unpleasant effects, and leaks will be the least harmful of them. Finding out that your home’s plumbing is damaged as the winter months start can cause a lot of stress, especially as the entire family likely planns on spending a lot of time indoors.

So to not let the water freeze in your pipes (and you know it can solidify quite fast), we offer you to get acquainted with several handy suggestions regarding the house piping maintenance. These tips can do wonders to help you prepare for winter and ensure that your household will remain comfortable regardless of how cold the weather gets.

Plumbing Care Tips Anyone Can Follow

You may think it is extremely complicated to take care of the plumbing system and get it ready for winter but in fact, even if you are not the professional plumber, you can do it easily - as Camilla Moln from beezzly says. Most of the plumbing problems you can solve by yourself, but for major work you should call the professional plumber east london to get your work done

It will simply be needed to learn several guiding tips, but like that, you can be certain that no pipe will be damaged during the colds filling the house with the flood. Regularly hiring a Dallas plumber or other local plumber is a cost-effective investment as they can properly check the overall condition of your home’s plumbing system and fix problems before these get worse.

Aside from professional help, you can follow these tips as part of your plumbing maintenance checklist:

1. Stop the external taps

To drip the extra liquid out, open the tap and unscrew the bleeder cap to let the water come out of the pipe. If you see that the dripping doesn’t stop, the faucet may need to be fixed.

2. Set up frost-free sill cocks

The working segments of this item are placed up to eighteen inches inside the wall, and not at the tap. Properly installed, the sill cock allows the liquid to drain from the pipage. Setting up frost-free sill cocks is a great way to ensure that all of your pipes will work properly regardless of how cold outside is. These prevent cold weather from freezing your pipes and your water from being siphoned back to your water supply.

3. Disunite all the hosepipes

If some liquid is left inside them, it can go back to the pipage and freeze there causing cracks. So disconnect them, drain, and keep until spring.

4. Protect the hose bibs

It will allow you to bring down the heat loss.

5.  Install heat cables

To keep pipage warm during the winter, heating cables can help. They measure the level of warmth and warm up the pipage when needed. Heat cables are essential to prepare your house plumbing for winter as these easily melt snow and prevent ice from building up in your pipes.

6. Seal the cracks and rim joists

Those spots are where the cold air will most likely sneak in. When we seal them and insulate, we protect the pipage from freezing.

Ideally, you should look for cracks before winter arrives so that you’ll have ample time to fix the problem.

7. Shut off water

It’s needed only if you’re leaving your house for several days or a long time. If the frozen empty pipage will crack, the damage will be still less than if they were filled with liquid.

8. Warm-up pipes on extremely cold days

If it’s very cold inside, open the kitchen cabinet doors and warm the plumbing with a fan of a portable heater - like that,  the vulnerable pipes that are usually hidden behind the doors will get the warmth they need. This will prevent your pipes from freezing during the winter.

9. Let the faucet run during a cold snap

On extremely cold days, it will be reasonable to let the faucet run slowly to bring down the pressure in the pipes and protect them from cracking. But if the faucet is outside, don’t use this method.

10. Keep the indoor temperature even

On extremely cold days, it’s better to keep the indoor “climate” steady or even set your home thermostat a couple of degrees higher.

How to Bring It All Back To Like

Winter doesn’t last forever and after three months of cold, the time will come to restart the plumbing system.

Doing it right is the same important as correctly preparing it for the cold days.

Since most people make mistakes when turning on the outside faucet, we will describe how to make it properly.

  • If you closed the valve on the spigot before winter, then skip this step. If for some reason it wasn’t done, then do it making sure it is all the way closed before you turn the water on!
  • Unscrew the water shutoff valve. It is often located in a basement or a crawlspace, so if you are not sure, find it beforehand. Sometimes the house has several spigots - in this situation, ensure you follow the correct pipe to the shutoff valve.
  • Turn the spigot on to let the water flow.
  • Before attaching a garden hose, remember to shut the spigot off.
  • And never leave either spigot or a hose unattached! Like that, you will prevent significant water leakage.

It may seem troublesome to do that every time you leave somewhere for more than a couple of days or if you go on vacation. Nevertheless, keeping the water in your house shut off can help to prevent a disastrous flooding in case the pipes won’t manage the cold and crack or even break.

And if you are not a professional plumber, we advise you to ask a specialist to check the house plumbing system regularly (once a year is more than enough if no serious damages exist and if the pipes are relatively new). Like that, you will be absolutely sure that everything is ok, and in case of any problem, you will get a professional advice on what to do to fix the issue.
